How to build God’s character and becoming His person is not simply about attending church, reading the Bible or identifying yourself as a Christian. It is about allowing God’s character to be formed within you until your thoughts, attitudes and actions begin to reflect the life of Christ.
Many people desire God’s blessings, His protection and His intervention in their circumstances. But God’s greatest desire is deeper than changing what is happening around us. He wants to transform what is happening within us.
Before God changes our situation, He often works on our character.
Every believer will face moments of weakness, uncertainty and fear. Fear can change our focus and cause us to look more at the problem than at the God who is greater than the problem.
That is why Jesus prepared His disciples for difficult seasons. He knew there would be times when fear would overwhelm them. This is why He prayed that their faith would not fail.
Jesus said:“In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33)
Jesus did not promise that we would never face challenges. He promised that we would never face them without Him.
The Holy Spirit Builds God’s Character Within Us
Look at our Lord Jesus Christ. In the Garden of Gethsemane, when He prayed concerning the cup of suffering, it was the Holy Spirit who sustained Him. It was not natural strength, talent or ability that carried Him through that moment.
Our natural gifts, education and experience can develop us and refine us as human beings, but they cannot produce the character of Christ.
Only God can build His character within us through His Word and His Spirit.
So, how does God build His character within us?How does a believer become God’s person?
It begins with understanding God’s Word.

God’s Word Reflects His Character
If you want to become God’s person, you must follow God’s process.
Jesus explained this process when He spoke to Nicodemus:
“Unless someone is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the Kingdom of God.” (John 3:5)
The Christian life begins with the Spirit of God. If you do not have the Spirit of God, you do not belong to Him.
God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship Him in Spirit and in truth.
How do we belong to Him?
God’s Word reflects His character.
The Word of God reveals who God is. God’s power works through His Word and His Spirit to talk to you, to bless you and to save you.
Where God speaks, power speaks.
This is why the Bible is not just a book we read. God’s Word is the expression of His character, and as we receive His Word, His character begins to be formed within us.
Meditation: Building God’s Character Through His Word
Meditation on God’s Word is a visit with Him. The Bible teaches us the importance of meditation.
God told Joshua:
“Meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.” (Joshua 1:8)
T.B. Joshua said:
“For me, I meditate on the Word day and night and whatever I do prospers.”
Meditation means taking what we read in the Bible and turning it over and over again in our hearts.
What is going on in your heart?
This is an important question because the more we meditate, the more our hearts act upon the Word. The more our hearts act upon the Word, the more the Word influences our conduct and character.
Keep your heart in order.
If you don’t get hold of your heart, your heart will be doing what it likes. You must have control of your heart. Your heart must respond to God.
No matter how steady your life appears to be, meditate on the Word of God day and night and whatever you do will prosper.
And no matter how unsteady your life, career or business may appear to be, meditate on the Word of God day and night.
The Spirit of God is released to the degree and measure that our hearts act upon the Word of God.
That is why our hearts must stand in reverence and honour of His Word.

God is looking for a heart that responds to Him.
Becoming God’s Person
Becoming God’s person requires a life that remains connected to God through His Word, prayer and the Holy Spirit.
The Spirit of God works in the heart that is willing to surrender.
This is why prayer is so important.
Are you praying in your heart?
To pray in the Spirit means to pray in harmony with Scripture.
The enemy loses no time to plot against you; you should lose no time committing yourself to the Lord.
A break in prayer will mean a break in faith; a break in faith is a break with God.
Prayer keeps us filled with the Spirit and connected to God. When we continue to pray and praise Him in our hearts, the Holy Spirit strengthens us.
The Bible says we do not know how to pray as we ought, but the Spirit helps us in our weaknesses.
This is the work of God within us.
He builds His character through His Word and His Spirit.
So ask yourself:
Is God’s Word shaping your heart?
Are you allowing the Holy Spirit to guide you?
Are you becoming God’s person?
God is not only interested in what He can do for you. He is also interested in what He can build within you.
As you meditate on His Word, honour Him with your heart and remain faithful in prayer, God will continue to build His character within you.
And through that process, you will become God’s person.
