Who is the Holy Spirit? TB Joshua

The question “Who is the Holy Spirit?” has echoed throughout history—from curious unbelievers to devoted Christians seeking deeper understanding.

While many associate Him with symbolic manifestations such as a dove (Matthew 3:16) or fire (Acts 2:3), these are merely expressions of His presence, not His identity.

In this series on “Who is the Holy Spirit?”, we will explore His nature as both divine and personal, examining scriptural foundations and the teachings of TB Joshua that reveal His vital role in the Trinity and in our walk with God.

Who is the Holy Spirit? Exploring His Divine and Personal Nature

Who is the Holy Spirit? TB Joshua addressed this important question by grounding his answer in Scripture. While many identify Him through symbolic expressions, TB Joshua emphasized that the Holy Spirit is, in fact, God.

As God, He is the third Person in the Godhead—God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit (Matthew 28:19).

By His nature, the He is first Divine, then a Person.

In fact, the Holy Spirit is just like the Father and the Son, for He is the Spirit of God and the Spirit of Christ. In His divinity, He is eternal—without beginning and without end (Genesis 1:2)—and powerful (Acts 10:38), just as God the Father and God the Son are.

He is a Person, but without flesh and blood. Believers can grieve Him (Ephesians 4:30–32), and He exercises His will (Acts 16:6–10) and has His mind (Romans 8:27).

The Spirit is important to God the Father (Ezekiel 37:1), God the Son (Acts 10:38; John 15:26), and to man (John 14:16, 26; 16:13).

Yet many people fail to give Him the place He rightfully deserves. Believers often ignore Him and even grieve Him, as He is the most sensitive of all beings.

TB Joshua Teaches the Holy Spirit is God

TB Joshua went on to answer a commonly asked question about the Christian faith and the Trinity: “How do you know that the Holy Spirit is God?”

Profoundly, he stated that He is just like God the Father in every way. He possesses the nature of God the Father and everything that makes Him God.

He is eternal, all-knowing, all-powerful, and omniscient. Just as God the Father is present everywhere at the same time, so is the Holy Spirit (Psalm 139:7).

He also pointed out that the Spirit of God works together with the Father and the Son, and cited the following scriptures: Hebrews 9:14, 1 Corinthians 2:10, Psalm 139:7, and John 1:32. The Bible says the Spirit worked together with the Father and the Son to create the world (Genesis 1:2–3).

Note: His other names include: Holy Ghost, Spirit of Christ, Spirit of Jehovah, Comforter, and Teacher. The Greek word Paraclete means “The One Called Alongside to Help.”

He is also described as the River of Living Water (John 7:38–39) by Jesus Christ, who said it would flow out of the believer’s innermost being. The Spirit produces this River of Life—bringing joy, peace, and power.
